Treasury to switch Direct Express debit card issuer for Social Security benefits

The Treasury Department is making a significant change to the bank that issues Direct Express debit cards for Social Security benefits.

Fifth Third Bank will replace Comerica Bank as the issuer sometime before early next year.

Recipients will receive information and new cards in the months ahead.

By the end of the year, anyone still receiving benefits by check will automatically be moved to the Direct Express card.
