Scattered showers and thunderstorms are starting to pop up this afternoon, with the greatest coverage expected between 3 and 5 p.m. Be sure to keep the umbrella handy if you have evening plans, as storms will continue to drift toward the coast after forming inland thanks to an easterly wind flow.
Temperatures have climbed into the mid-90s across Southwest Florida, with heat index values once again reaching the triple digits, well above average for late June. If you're spending time outdoors, be sure to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade.
Monday will bring a dry start, with your morning commute expected to remain rain-free. Rain chances will stay lower throughout the day as Saharan dust filters into the upper atmosphere, helping to suppress storm development just a touch.
The drier conditions will also allow temperatures to climb even higher, with afternoon highs reaching the upper 90s across much of Southwest Florida. Heat index values could approach 109 degrees in inland Collier County. While an isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm remains possible, rainfall will be hit-or-miss, and many communities will stay dry.
Looking ahead, temperatures will remain in the mid-90s with scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms returning each day through the Independence Day weekend.
In the tropics, the National Hurricane Center continues to monitor an area off the Carolina coast for potential tropical development. A broad area of low pressure is expected to form after a cold front stalls and dissipates over the region during the middle of the week. As of the 8 a.m. update, nothing has change...the system has only a 20% chance of tropical development over the next seven days and poses no threat to Southwest Florida.
If you're heading out on the water today, keep an eye on the radar for developing storms. Winds will be out of the east at 5 to 10 knots before becoming westerly later in the day, with a light chop in the bays.
Don't forget to reapply sunscreen, today's UV index is an extreme 11!
