Your Sunday starts off dry and pleasant, with temperatures in the low to mid-70s under mostly sunny skies. Overall, it's a beautiful start to the day. Clouds will increase by late morning, bringing the chance for a stray shower around midday. The best opportunity for scattered showers and thunderstorms will be between 3 and 5 p.m., so be sure to pack an umbrella if you have Sunday evening plans.
Storms will primarily develop inland before drifting back toward the coast on an easterly wind flow. Temperatures soar to the mid 90s, with heat indices in the triple digits once again, well above average for this time of year.
Your Monday morning commute looks dry, and rain chances will remain lower throughout the day as Saharan dust moves into the upper atmosphere, helping suppress storm development. The drier conditions will also allow temperatures to climb even higher, with highs reaching the upper 90s across much of Southwest Florida. Heat index values could approach 109 degrees in inland Collier County. While a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms are still possible on Monday, rainfall will be hit-or-miss, and many locations will stay dry.
Looking ahead, temperatures will remain in the mid-90s with scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms continuing through the Independence Day weekend.
In the tropics, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area off the Carolina coast for potential tropical development. A broad area of low pressure is expected to develop after a cold front stalls and dissipates midweek. As of the 2 a.m. update, it has just a 20% chance of tropical development over the next seven days. This system poses no threat to Southwest Florida.
If you're heading out on the water today, keep an eye on the radar for developing storms. Winds will be out of the east at 5 to 10 knots before becoming westerly later in the day, with a light chop in the bays.
Don't forget to reapply sunscreen, today's UV index is an extreme 11!
