Uber has announced changes to its background check policy, expanding the list of criminal offenses that permanently disqualify individuals from driving for the company in the United States.
In a news release, the company stated it will no longer allow people with prior convictions for violent felonies, sexual crimes, stalking, and strangulation to become drivers.
Uber said that these offenses, whether charged as misdemeanors or felonies, are disqualifying regardless of when they occurred because they can be predictors of future violence.
Uber is currently facing thousands of lawsuits from passengers who allege they were sexually assaulted during rides.
