COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — A Collier County judge denied a request Monday to release Genise Taylor from jail so she could enter a long-term residential substance abuse treatment program while awaiting trial.
Taylor, 24, has remained in the Collier County Jail without bond since her arrest in March following a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 75.
During Monday's hearing, Taylor's attorney asked the court to release her to an inpatient treatment facility. They said she had already been accepted into one and could begin treatment as soon as possible.
But the judge denied the motion, saying Taylor can access substance abuse treatment programs while in jail.
Taylor is charged with DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage, reckless driving and vehicular homicide.
The charges stem from a crash on March 18 that investigators say happened hours after a Collier County Sheriff's deputy stopped Taylor and determined she was too impaired to drive.
According to investigators, the deputy arranged for a friend to pick Taylor up and take possession of her vehicle. Before leaving, the deputy warned her, "Don't be driving drunk because what's going to happen is you're going to kill yourself or kill somebody else."
Investigators say Taylor later got back behind the wheel with a blood alcohol level of more than three times the legal limit. Authorities say she drove the wrong way on Interstate 75 and crashed head-on into a vehicle driven by 96-year-old Arthur Gilbert, killing him instantly.
Taylor has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Following Monday's ruling, Taylor will remain in the Collier County Jail as her criminal case moves forward. A trial date has not yet been set.
WINK News will continue to follow the case and provide updates as they become available.
