American Airlines flights could be on the horizon for Naples Airport as the Fort Worth-based company announced that it has begun selling tickets starting Dec. 2, pending approval of an agreement.
The Naples Airport has not offered commercial flights since 2017, but in recent months the airport's board has been discussing the possible return of commercial passenger flights.
In May, American Airlines submitted a letter of intent to offer daily flights beginning Dec. 2, including service to the airline's hub in Charlotte, N.C. American Airlines' service would be offered aboard PSA Airlines, which is a subsidiary of the airline.
American Airlines stated it would use 65-seat Bombardier CRJ-700 regional jets that operate under Naples Airport’s maximum takeoff weight of 75,000 pounds.
“American is proud to connect Naples to our unmatched network across the U.S.,” according to a statement from American Airlines. “New nonstop service to our Charlotte hub will give customers in Southwest Florida convenient one-stop access to nearly 180 destinations worldwide. We look forward to welcoming customers onboard and continuing our collaborative partnership with the Naples Airport and community.”
The airline said all flights would be scheduled in compliance with Naples Airport's voluntary curfew of 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily
According to Naples Airport, some steps remain: the negotiation of a use agreement, approval of the Transportation Security Administration, and facility improvements. The airport stated that an update is expected at the Naples Airport Authority board meeting on Aug. 20.
“Negotiations are progressing as anticipated,” Chris Rozansky, executive director of the Naples Airport Authority, said. “American has been a great partner during this process, even agreeing to schedule flights to avoid our voluntary nighttime curfew and committing to the use of some of the quieter regional jets available today.”
Passengers can book Naples flights directly through American Airlines' website or through the airline's app, the Naples Airport said.
