Organizers for Babcock Ranch's 4th of July "Canopy Kaboom" event announced on Monday that due to Charlotte County's ongoing burn ban, it has been canceled.
In a post on Facebook, the event organizers said that they pursued several avenues to continue the event, and were in contact with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, county commissioners and the Fire Marshal.
They added that they also applied for event insurance, however the current permitting process does not support the type of fireworks typically used for "Canopy Kaboom."
Charlotte County has been under a burn ban since April, when it was reinstated following the Ranchettes fire that burned through 45 acres.
The ban prohibits all outdoor burning, which includes the following:
"This decision is absolutely heartbreaking for us," the event organizers said in their post. "Canopy Kaboom began as a few neighbors gathering at the end of our cul-de-sac and grew into something much greater than a fireworks show. It became a way to honor our Veterans and those that continue to sacrifice for us today, bring our community together, support local organizations, and provide scholarships to deserving students."
The organizers say that they will be reaching out to individual contributors who helped to raise more than $7,000 for the event. They say that contributors can get their funds returned or pursue ways to donate them to local organizations.
