ESTERO, Fla. (WINK) — Florida Gulf Coast University has named former professional golfer Lee McCoy the fifth head coach in its men’s golf program’s history.
McCoy replaces Andrew Danna, who left FGCU after six seasons to become the head coach at Kansas State.
FGCU announced the hiring on Tuesday after McCoy spent three seasons leading Columbus State. His teams advanced to the NCAA regionals each year and reached the NCAA Division II Championships in each of the past two seasons.
Columbus State finished No. 8 nationally in 2025-26 after reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship match play. McCoy was also named the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year.
“I truly believe that the sky is the limit for this program,” McCoy said in a press release. “I look forward to building on the foundation that Coach Danna built during his time leading the program.”
McCoy coached four All-Americans, five all-region golfers and four all-conference selections at Columbus State. His teams recorded 14 top-four finishes across 34 tournaments and finished ranked in the top 15 nationally in each of his final two seasons.
“His winning mentality and proven results make him a great choice to lead our men’s golf team,” FGCU Interim Director of Athletics Lauren Leister said in a press release.
A Dunedin, Florida, native, McCoy played collegiately at Georgia from 2013 to 2016. He won seven individual tournaments, earned three All-America selections and was named the 2016 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year.
McCoy later competed professionally on the PGA Tour Canada and Korn Ferry Tour. He made 13 PGA Tour starts and recorded a career-best fourth-place finish at the 2016 Valspar Championship while competing as an amateur.
After ending his professional career, McCoy returned to Georgia to complete his degree and served as a student assistant coach during the 2022-23 season.
