The Fort Myers Beach Pier project has been offically been approved years after Hurricane Ian destroyed it.
The project received the required federal funding to begin reconstruction.
According to Lee County, coordination work that takes place before construction begins is underway. This work includes coordination meetings, final review of the contractor's project schedule and construction submittals, and coordination with regulatory agencies and project stakeholders.
The county said it is working closely with consultants to facilitate meetings with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to ensure all environmental, safety, operational, permitting, and regulatory requirements are met before construction begins.
Approval for the pier has been a long-awaited process, which was made longer when the federal government shut down in March.
"Well, the pier obviously has been going on for a long time," Fort Myers Beach Mayor Dan Allers said. "The approval process takes a lot of help and a lot of work between multiple divisions of both state, local, and federal partners... we're certainly excited about it."
In communication with Gulf Coast News, the county relayed a message:
"The county understands the community is eager to see visible construction activity. It is important to keep in mind that preparing crews, mobilizing equipment, and staging materials takes time for projects of this size and complexity. This work is actively moving forward behind the scenes to ensure construction begins as safely and efficiently as possible. The county appreciates the public's patience and support as this landmark project progresses."
