CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — A lightning strike sparked a fire in a Cape Coral home Monday evening, sending one person to the hospital and leaving a family pet behind.
The fire broke out in the attic of a home at 35th Avenue Northwest and Kismet Parkway after lightning struck the structure. Heavy smoke filled the home as a result.
The Cape Coral Fire Department responded to the scene and provided details about the incident. They said three people, two cats and a dog were inside the home at the time of the fire.
All three residents escaped safely and managed to bring one cat and the dog with them. A second cat hid inside the home and did not survive.
One person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and was last reported in stable condition.
