American Airlines has begun selling tickets for flights from Naples to Charlotte, North Carolina, even though the Naples Airport Authority has not yet approved the service.
Anna Gallaviz and her daughter Sophie, who enjoy watching planes together, are excited about the possibility of new flights.
“She loves airplanes,” Gallaviz said.
Gallaviz asked her daughter what she wants to be when she grows up. Sophie responded, “A pilot!”
Currently, tickets for flights starting in December are available for purchase. A search for round-trip flights during the first week of availability showed a price of $475.
“So, I mean, I probably go to RSW, especially if it's cheaper. So I mean if it fluctuates then we'd definitely consider it,” Gallaviz said.
Flying out of Southwest Florida International Airport for the same dates could save travelers $56, according to a price comparison.
American Airlines declined to provide an interview and did not answer questions about whether ticket prices would change after approval or what would happen to purchased tickets if the contract falls through.
Ted Dall, a Naples resident, shared his perspective on the situation.
“Well, it has been in the news, not just with you today, but, you know, if they're already marketing this and, you know, taking compensation for flights that are, already planned, I would probably above the 51% be guessing that this is going to pass through and that the people in the know know that, you know, this is going to carry forward,” Dall said.
Airport officials stated the plane would seat 65 passengers, and if approved, the first flight is scheduled for Dec. 2.
