FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK)—A major highway that connects Southwest Florida to the east coast will have a new name starting tomorrow.
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill renaming State Road 80 as President Donald J. Trump Highway. The highway renaming is part of a larger transportation bill that includes several new honorary designations across the state.
The 124-mile road runs from U.S. 41 in downtown Fort Myers all the way to West Palm Beach. The law requires signs to be installed at each end of the highway.
The new designation does not change addresses or local street names. While the name is changing, the road itself is not.
The transportation bill also renames Palm Beach International Airport in West Palm Beach as President Donald J. Trump International Airport. This change sparked mixed reactions from people WINK News spoke with downtown.
"I think that's great. I mean, goes to show what he's done, and what people think about it here," Sean Anderson said.
Rich Arnold disagreed with the decision.
"I don't see any reason to rename things, I just don't get it," Arnold said.
The new designations take effect tomorrow. WINK News is working to get answers from the Florida Department of Transportation about what the signage changes will look like and how much they will cost.
