State Road 80, commonly known as Palm Beach Boulevard, has been given an honorary designation as President Donald J. Trump Highway, spanning from Lee County to Palm Beach County.
Vanessa Vincent, a Fort Myers resident, shared her reaction to the news.
"Actually, grew up in Fort Myers, and it's kind of a shock. It's the first I'm hearing of it. So, it's very interesting to hear," Vincent said.
The honorary designation coincides with the implementation of several new laws in Florida.
George Arquilla, another Fort Myers resident, shared his thoughts on the change.
"Change happens, you know, with everybody, and I think that there are certain exceptions that need to be made when it comes to presidents again, whether they're on one side of the aisle, regardless of what side of the aisle they're on. And I think it's in support of the country as a greater whole," Arquilla said.
Vincent questioned the relevance of the designation to the local community.
"Whether you like the president or not, there's so many things going on. And to have Fort Myers tied to something that doesn't really seem super relevant to our city, it doesn't really make a ton of sense," she said.
The Florida Department of Transportation clarified that no existing signs will be replaced as part of the designation. According to the bill analysis, budgeting for markers at the beginning of the highway in Lee and Palm Beach counties has been taken into consideration.
Marisol Palencia, a Fort Myers resident, commented on the decision.
"We're in the United States, and I believe it's a country where people have freedom of speech. We all know we're going through difficult times here in the U.S., but that's the state's decision," Palencia said.
Robert Fowler, also from Fort Myers, expressed mixed feelings about naming roads after political figures.
"I support the president. I don't know if I really support a road being named after him or other politicians, which we have in this county. We have numerous ones in the past that have been named after," Fowler said.
