The Auto Club Group is activating its Tow to Go program for the July 4th holiday weekend, offering free rides to help keep impaired drivers off the road as millions of Americans travel.
According to AAA, the confidential service will be available from 6 p.m. Friday, July 3, through 6 a.m. Monday, July 6. The program provides a free ride for an impaired driver and their vehicle within a 10-mile radius and is available to both AAA members and non-members.
More than 72 million Americans are expected to travel during the Independence Day holiday period, including 61.4 million who will drive.
"With millions of Americans on the road, even one impaired driver is too many," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. "Tow to Go provides a last-resort option that can prevent a tragedy before it happens and ultimately save lives."
Drivers who need the service can call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO or (855) 286-9246.
AAA said Tow to Go is intended as a last-resort option, not a substitute for planning ahead. The organization encourages people celebrating the holiday to designate a sober driver or arrange another form of transportation before drinking.
"Tow to Go is there if you need it, but it's not a substitute for proper planning," Jenkins said. "The safest choice is always to arrange a ride before you go out."
AAA also noted that it received more than 687,000 roadside assistance calls during last year's Independence Day holiday period from drivers experiencing vehicle trouble.
The organization also reminds drivers to never drive impaired, always wear a seat belt, avoid distractions behind the wheel and stay alert for pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists.
