PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (WINK) — With the nation's 250th birthday just around the corner, whether Southwest Florida residents can set off fireworks this holiday weekend depends on where they live.
Collier County's burn ban has ended, opening the door for more holiday celebrations. However, cities like Naples and Marco Island have their own rules in place.
In Charlotte County, commissioners called an emergency meeting to decide Thursday morning whether their burn ban should continue. Fireworks can legally be bought and sold in Charlotte County, but setting them off remains illegal under the current countywide burn ban.
Chris Wilson said he supports keeping the restrictions in place.
"I genuinely think that the burn ban is a good thing, given how dry it's been lately," Wilson said.
Wilson added that there are other ways to show patriotism without risking a fire.
"There's several other ways that we can celebrate that still get your patriotism across and still get your point across without necessarily jeopardizing a fire," Wilson said.
He also warned that dry conditions could lead to more danger.
"I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if we do see some brush fires," Wilson said.
Not everyone agrees with the restrictions. Harley O'Brien said the holiday is too important to skip fireworks.
"I think you absolutely should. This is America, we should be able to do what we want to do," O'Brien said.
O'Brien said celebrating responsibly is the key.
"Like my family, we always made sure we were in an open area, no grass around, all of that stuff. You should prepare, don't get too messed up, make sure you're coherent and able to protect anybody," O'Brien said.
Regardless of what officials decide, O'Brien said she already has her weekend plans locked in.
"We'll be doing fireworks, we'll be going to the beach, me, boyfriend, a whole bunch of friends," O'Brien said.
The Charlotte County commissioners are set to meet Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. to determine whether the burn ban will be lifted ahead of the holiday weekend.
