NAPLES, Fla. (WINK) — The Naples Police Department announced enhanced safety measures for the July 4th weekend as the city celebrates America 250.
Lt. Bryan McGinn said the department will have extra officers on the streets, at event sites and along waterways to manage crowds, respond to incidents and assist with traffic control. Officers will focus on safety and crime suppression throughout the weekend.
Road closures will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Parking along the parade route will be prohibited beginning at 2 a.m. Saturday, with towing enforced.
Because of construction at the pier, the fireworks will be launched from a barge offshore and can be viewed from all city beaches.
The police department warned residents to expect heavy traffic, delays, parking issues and crowded roads and beaches as people travel from all over for the beaches, parade and fireworks. Officials urged drivers to drive sober, buckle up and follow all speed limits.
The department also reminded residents to stay alert in crowds, keep belongings close and watch for suspicious activity. Officials asked the public to call 911 if they hear fireworks that sound like gunfire, as it may be a safety hazard.
For water safety, the department reminded boaters to wear life jackets, especially children, and never operate boats or swim under the influence. Boaters should have a float plan and let someone know their route and expected return time.
The non-emergency police line is 239-213-3000.
