With Fourth of July weekend approaching, feeding a crowd at your backyard grill-out can come with a hefty price tag.
WINK Smart Anchor Mayzie Olson compared prices of cookout staples across several major grocery stores to help shoppers find the best deals, specifically when it comes to ground beef and hot dogs, to see where Southwest Florida families can save money.
As of Thursday morning, Publix shoppers will pay about $8.49 for a pound of 80% lean ground chuck beef.
At Walmart, that price drops to $7.23 for the same thing.
Shoppers at Target will find a pound of that same ground chuck beef for $7.39.
For those who prefer hot dogs, there are deals to be found as well, depending on where they check out.
A 10-pack of Oscar Mayer wieners at Publix is running at $6.09, with a buy-one-get-one-free deal right now.
At Walmart, the price of this product significantly drops to $2.84.
Then at Target, the price for the 10-pack is $2.99.
In the hot dog department, shopping at Publix could save consumers money if they are hosting a larger party. Otherwise, the best deal for just ten hot dogs will be found at Walmart.
Shopping experts recommend comparing premium brands to store-brand products as an easy way to cut costs. Buying in bulk at warehouse clubs can offer savings for large gatherings, but only if the food will not be wasted.
Checking weekly ads, using digital coupons and taking advantage of holiday promotions can also help reduce your grocery bill.
