A veteran who operates a family-owned fireworks stand in Cape Coral is asking for the public's help after several juveniles reportedly stole merchandise from his business earlier this week.
Damien DeWitt said the theft happened Monday at his fireworks stand along Santa Barbara Boulevard while he was eating lunch. According to DeWitt, the side of the tent was open, allowing the suspects to quickly reportedly grab fireworks and run away.
"I'm independently owned. I don't have the fancy signs that say I'm corporate," DeWitt said.
He said the suspects acted quickly.
"They had their hands filled, actually, with this product right here," DeWitt said. "They grabbed it, two of them very fast, and then they just took off almost immediately."
DeWitt shared surveillance video that he said shows three juveniles on dirt bikes reportedly moments before the theft. He reported the incident to the Cape Coral Police Department, which took a report. DeWitt said officers recommended installing chicken wire around parts of the stand to make it more difficult for thieves to access the merchandise.
"They scout almost every night, so it's a little worrisome," DeWitt said.
Although DeWitt estimated the stolen fireworks were worth only a few hundred dollars, he said the loss came directly from his personal savings and affects his family's primary source of income.
The incident has also drawn support from customers.
Daniel Martin, who stopped by the stand with his family after hearing about the theft, said he sympathizes with DeWitt.
"This is a veteran-owned and family-owned business," Martin said. "I like to support family-owned businesses, so I know what it's like."
Despite the setback, DeWitt said he is trying to remain positive.
"I really could not believe it," he said. "Kids are so brazen these days."
Cape Coral police said they are investigating the theft and are searching for the juveniles involved. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Cape Coral Police Department.
