As Floridians prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks and cookouts, state and local officials are urging caution to prevent wildfires during the festivities.
The Florida Forest Service is reminding residents that a few seconds of entertainment can quickly spark a wildfire if safety measures are not followed.
Florida has already seen more than 2,400 wildfires this year. While recent rain has provided some relief, officials warn that even one stray spark can ignite dry grass or brush.
"We do anticipate this being an especially high rate of calls this weekend just due to how dry it is," said Alexis McLellan of San Carlos Park Fire Rescue.
Officials recommend lighting fireworks in a clear, open area away from homes, trees, and anything flammable. They also advise keeping a bucket of water or a hose nearby, never leaving fireworks or grills unattended, and soaking used fireworks in water for at least 15 minutes before disposal.
Officials emphasize that a little preparation can ensure your Fourth of July ends with a grand finale, not a visit from the fire department. If anything goes wrong, they urge residents to call 911 immediately.
