SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, (WINK)—Florida Highway Patrol troopers made more than 100 traffic stops during their Independence Day weekend detail in Southwest Florida, which included the arrest of an impaired driver who fled from law enforcement.
According to an FHP press release, troopers issued 69 citations and 37 warnings during the Red, White and Blue Lights operation on the night of July 3.
The detail also resulted in one arrest of a habitual traffic violator and impaired driver. Troopers clocked the impaired driver speeding in a Kia SUV on U.S. 41 and Colonial Boulevard at 10:58 p.m. The driver recklessly fled the traffic stop, damaging three other vehicles and a street sign with no injuries reported.
State troopers performed a PIT maneuver in the area of U.S. 41 and State Road 78. The driver refused to exit the Kia after the maneuver. The driver was identified as Antonio Miguel Burgos, 29, of Fort Myers. Burgos was tased to overcome his resistance and booked into the Lee County Jail for numerous criminal offenses.
Burgos faces charges including aggravated flee to elude, flee to elude at high speeds, felony DUI, habitual traffic offender, four counts of DUI property damage, four counts of reckless driving with property damage, resisting arrest, hit and run and refusal to submit to a lawful DUI test.
FHP described Burgos's actions as "a textbook example of what NOT to do EVER, especially on Independence Day Weekend." The press release reminded drivers to be responsible behind the wheel during the holiday weekend.
