Although personal fireworks are prohibited in Punta Gorda this Fourth of July due to Charlotte County's ongoing burn ban, residents can still see a professional fireworks display at Laishley Park. Workers spent Friday setting up equipment for the event, which organizers say will prioritize safety.
Jerry Cleffi, the fireworks show organizer, has been involved in the event for years.
"This is my, I think, 16th year as an organizer of the fireworks," Cleffi said.
For Cleffi, the event is more than just a job.
"I grew up in Punta Gorda, and I've been a lifelong resident, so it's a way to give back to the community for me," he said.
This year's show will include additional safety measures due to the burn ban, which the Charlotte County Board of Commissioners extended on Thursday. The ban has been in place since April.
"We're not actually shooting the fireworks over land at all. They're all shot over the water," Cleffi said. "We'll have fire and fire engine fireboat here on standby during the whole entire fireworks show."
Ashley Turner from the Charlotte County Fire Department emphasized the importance of the ban, citing the dry conditions.
"The reality is, it's dry and one spark and one ember can travel a quarter of a mile. And depending on the wind conditions, you can start a fire in your neighborhood or somewhere else in the community," Turner said.
Despite the restrictions, Cleffi promised an enjoyable celebration.
"It's going to be a great time celebrating America's 250th birthday," he said.
It's unclear how long Charlotte County's burn ban will last.
