Florida Highway Patrol troopers arrested a Fort Myers man Friday night who they say was drunk driving and fled a traffic stop.
According to FHP, troopers saw the driver speeding in a KIA SUV on US-41 at Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers at around 10:58 p.m. Troopers attempted to stop the driver, who then recklessly fled from the traffic stop, damaging three other vehicles and a street sign in the process.
Troopers used a PIT maneuver and caused the SUV to spin out in the area of US-41 and SR-78. The driver, who was impaired, refused to exit his vehicle, FHP said. Troopers deployed a taser to apprehend the driver.
The driver, identified as Antonio Miguel Burgos, 28, was arrested and booked into the Lee County Jail, FHP said. He faces charges of aggravated flee to elude, flee to elude at high speeds, felony DUI, habitual traffic offender, four counts of DUI property damage, four counts of reckless driving with property damage, resisting arrest, hit-and-run, and refusal to submit to DUI testing.
The arrest comes as FHP is conducting Operation Red White & Blue Lights, aimed at stopping impaired drivers, super speeders, and other traffic violators. FHP reported that it issued 69 citations and 37 warnings in the Southwest Florida Region on Friday.
