A judge ordered Rolbert Joachin to be held without bond during a court hearing in the case of Julia Curvo, whose body was found in brush off Hough Street in late January after being missing for more than a week.
The judge's order for pre-trial detention did not change much for Joachin, who was denied bond after he was accused of fatally attacking Fort Myers mother Nilufa Easmin with a hammer outside of a gas station on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The hearing was an emotional moment for Curvo’s family, as her grandmother, Sandra Stephens, faced the man accused of killing her granddaughter.
"It was very hard seeing him in real life and knowing what he did to my granddaughter," Stephens said. "He did a horrible thing to her, and she didn't deserve it, and it's going to be hard to be in there every single time that he's there."
Monday's court appearance was the first with Joachin's new attorney, Lee Hollander, who was appointed last week after the public defender’s office and regional counsel cited a conflict of interest. Hollander previously represented convicted killer Wade Wilson in 2024.
"Prepared, but, you know, once you read the arrest affidavit, it wasn't much more in the file that I could access. I have to wait for the state to send me discovery," Hollander said when asked if he was prepared to represent Joachin.
Joachin was arrested in April after he was reportedly caught on surveillance video attacking Fort Myers mother Nilufa Easmin with a hammer outside a gas station on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. That case received national attention.
Stephens said she is determined to keep her granddaughter’s memory alive as legal proceedings continue in both cases.
"I plan to be here every time, because Julia deserves. She was a human being, and she didn't deserve to die," Stephens said. "She had an infectious smile. It was beautiful. She had a beautiful smile. She could have been a model, but she had her problems, like everybody in life does. But she was, she was a beautiful human being," she added.
The judge also ruled to enter the complete, unredacted probable cause affidavit into the record. Joachin’s next court date is scheduled for Aug. 3 for arraignment, though he has filed a waiver and entered a written plea of not guilty.
