Native plants are being replanted along the Sanibel Causeway today to restore vegetation lost during hurricanes and enhance the island's resilience.
Trees, shrubs, and groundcovers will be planted from the Sanibel Causeway down to the island's four-way stop.
The purpose of the project is to replant native vegetation that was wiped out during hurricanes from 2022 to 2024, including Hurricane Ian. Plant selection was determined by identifying species that showed resilience against extreme hurricane-force winds and storm surges.
This initiative is being led by Roots in Resilience, a citizen-led effort focused on reforesting and replanting Sanibel with native vegetation.
Funding for the project comes from donations, grants, and the city of Sanibel.
The project is expected to be completed in three to four weeks.
