SOUTHWEST FLORIDA (WINK) — A Chilean company is recalling frozen organic blueberries sold at Publix stores across eight states due to potential E. coli contamination.
Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. announced the recall of GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries in 10 oz. packages because the product may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O145:H28. The recalled blueberries were shipped to Publix locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
E. coli O145 is a Shiga toxin-producing bacteria that can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. Most healthy individuals recover within a week, but some infections may result in hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication that particularly affects young children, older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The recall affects only one specific lot of the frozen blueberries. Consumers should check their freezers for packages with lot code 60401 and a best by date of February 9, 2028.
There have been 12 confirmed cases of consumers experiencing stomach illness between May 11 and June 5 linked with E. coli O145:H28 infections. The company initiated the recall after receiving reports of consumers experiencing digestive illnesses who had consumed GreenWise frozen blueberries.
Consumers who have the affected product should not eat it. The blueberries should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Frutas y Hortalizas S.A. is working with regulatory authorities and has instructed customers to immediately isolate the product and discontinue its distribution.
