Punta Gorda city leaders are considering a proposed ordinance that would ban golf carts on a portion of West Retta Esplanade.
Currently, golf carts are allowed to cross the Tidal Creek Bridge and continue on West Retta Esplanade west of Shreve Street. However, the proposed ordinance would remove that exception from the city code, meaning golf carts would no longer be permitted on that stretch of road.
City officials said the goal of the proposed change is to improve safety and better manage traffic in the area.
This is the first reading of the ordinance, so no decision will be made yet. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts at the meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
