CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)— A suspicious person call in a Cape Coral neighborhood turned into an armed burglary investigation after police say they found a man hiding inside a homeowner's lanai bathroom with multiple firearms.
The homeowners were out of town, but their security cameras were still watching. When they saw someone they didn't recognize in their driveway, they called a neighbor to check.
Hours later, that same man came back, and neighbors called 911. Police say it was that second trip to the home that prompted a neighbor to call.
"We had two different neighbors actually call to let us know that there was someone at their neighbor's house that should not be there," said Mercedes Simons of the Cape Coral Police Department.
Officers surrounded the home. They say they heard a noise coming from the pool bathroom inside the screened lanai.
The officer called the man out, and he came out with his hands up. While the officer was detaining him, he looked in the bathroom and saw multiple firearms in a camo jacket.
Police say 35-year-old Christopher Felix Santos was taken into custody. Neighbors were shocked to learn what happened just a few houses away.
"I can't believe that, because there's never been like any like crime around our neighborhood or anything like that," a neighbor said.
"Yeah, it's actually really scary, because I've been here for I don't even know, like 15 years, and nothing's ever happened like that before," another neighbor said. "So hopefully it never happens again."
The Cape Coral Police Department says they believe those calls from neighbors may have stopped the situation from escalating. Santos is charged with armed burglary of a dwelling.
