TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WINK)— A new statewide poll shows a proposed property tax amendment would pass if the election were held today, with 64% of Florida voters saying they'd vote yes.
The survey from Sachs Media found support from an unexpected group. Both homeowners and renters back the proposal at nearly identical rates, with about two-thirds of each saying they'd vote yes.
That stands out because the expanded homestead exemption is designed to benefit homeowners. Some experts have warned that if local governments try to make up lost property tax revenue, landlords could face higher costs, which could eventually be passed along to renters.
While 64% support sounds like a comfortable lead, constitutional amendments in Florida need 60% of the vote to pass. The poll puts the measure above that threshold, but there isn't much room for support to slip before November.
Campaigning is expected to ramp up in the coming months. This week, a reporter asked Gov. Ron DeSantis whether he plans to campaign for the amendment.
DeSantis has been a strong supporter of property tax relief. He has also indicated he's not completely satisfied with changes lawmakers made to the proposal before putting it on the ballot.
The poll shows the biggest divide is political. Republicans support the amendment by a wide margin, while Democrats largely don't.
