ALVA, Fla. (WINK)—A River Hall couple says they've been living in the dark for more than a year while every street around them has lights except theirs.
After months of getting passed from one agency to another, Marie Swanger and her husband called WINK News. The difference between their street and the rest of the neighborhood was impossible to miss.
When the sun goes down, Bishop Boulevard and Waterwillow Court go dark. Just around the corner, street lights illuminate nearly every other road.
"The problem is all these new homes are being built, and they all have street lights already. We have no street lights," Swanger said.
Swanger said the darkness isn't just frustrating. It's a safety concern.
With no sidewalks, she worries drivers won't see people out walking until it's too late.
"You don't see them until they're right in front of you, so it's very dangerous, and we can't seem to get anybody to take interest in it," Swanger said.
Swanger said she and her husband spent months making call after call. The HOA, the developer, Florida Power and Light and even county officials only made them feel like they kept getting sent somewhere else.
"We've tried every possibility that we've come up with, and everybody says it's somebody else," Swanger said.
WINK News reached out to everyone involved.
The HOA said the lighting issues should be resolved shortly. FPL confirmed it is now working to install street lights in the area.
For Swanger, that's all she's been asking for.
"They put street lights in, and we have lights and safety," Swanger said. "Hopefully we can get some results."
FPL did not provide a timeline for when the street lights will be installed but said the project is moving forward.
