ESTERO, Fla. (WINK)— A brush fire near the Hyatt and Pelican Landing has been extinguished after presenting unique challenges for firefighters.
According to Estero Fire Rescue, the fire was located approximately 500 yards from the nearest access point, in an area inaccessible to ground units. Aerial firefighting operations were the only effective way to reach the fire.
The Collier County Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit assisted with the firefighting efforts. Their helicopter completed 45 water drops, delivering nearly 10,000 gallons of water onto the fire.
The Florida Forest Service also provided support and coordination throughout the incident. While typical afternoon summer rains often help slow or extinguish fires like this, Mother Nature hadn't cooperated over the past several days, according to the press release.
The coordinated efforts of partner agencies, along with improving conditions, led to the fire being successfully extinguished. Estero Fire Rescue thanked residents for their patience and cooperation while crews worked to safely manage the incident.
