Cape Coral cop and BMX coach Nick Jones to lead Team USA in Australia

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK)—A Cape Coral man is once again taking his coaching talents to the world stage.

Nick Jones has been selected to coach Team USA at the BMX World Championships in Australia for the third time. Jones, the track operator at Cape Coral BMX, is one of just eight coaches selected to lead Team USA at the championships.

"I was always Team USA everything, the Olympics, right now the World Cup. I don't care. I'm cheering Team USA, and so now being able to, you know, coach and represent your country with something that says Team USA across your chest, it's really fulfilling," Jones said.

Jones didn't grow up on a BMX track. It was his kids who got him involved, and he has gone from cheering them on to coaching some of the world's best riders.

He'll be coaching more than 400 American riders from across the country overseas. Jones has spent the last decade building something special at home.

"When I first started, we probably had about 15 kids that were coming consistently, and now we have riders in the hundreds. They rank each track, and we were ranked, I think, 120th in the country, which wasn't too bad, you know, for a small track that we are. And the last time I checked, so far this year we're ranked sixth in the country," Jones said.

When he isn't coaching riders, Jones serves the community as a patrol sergeant with the Cape Coral Police Department. He says both jobs share the same mission—making a difference.

"This is my outlet, you know, getting to hang out with the kids and being in a positive environment-they have more of an impact on me, honestly, than I do on them, and they don't realize that," Jones said.

Jones says Crosby Backer, one local rider, has a legitimate chance of bringing home the title from Australia.
