Fort Myers couple warns neighbors after bear kills bunny

A Fort Myers couple is mourning the loss of their pet bunny, Arlo, after they say he was taken away by a bear during his daily exercise time on their lanai.

"That night, I couldn't sleep. I thought he was coming back," Ana Yepes said.

Fabio Yepes said he was home when the attack happened.

"The whole time I was sitting here, then I heard a very loud noise. I thought to myself, it's not safe," Fabio said.

A neighbor captured a photo of a bear behind houses on Whispering Palms Drive, and the couple believes it might be the same bear from the attack on June 29th.

This incident is part of a string of recent bear sightings along the Gulf Coast. On Friday, another Fort Myers family lost two pet bunnies after a bear broke into their screened-in porch.

"The whole neighborhood is afraid," Fabio said.

After losing Arlo, the Yepes family repaired their lanai screen, but they said the bear returned Wednesday and ripped through the new screen just days later.

"The bear came back and we already fixed it. I bought the material and my son-in-law fixed it. He came and ripped it again," Ana said.

The couple said they contacted Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and that FWC set up a trap but did not catch the bear.
