Mass shooting at Tucson pizza restaurant leaves 9 hurt, suspect shot

TUCSON, Ariz. (WINK)—A police officer shot and critically injured a person suspected of shooting at least nine people in downtown Tucson early Sunday morning, according to the Tucson Police Department.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. at a pizza restaurant in the city's downtown area. Police said all victims were struck in their extremities, and at least one person was shot multiple times.

All of the victims were taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition, investigators said. Responding officers quickly arrived at the scene and saw the suspect running away.

Officers gave the suspect multiple commands before one officer opened fire after those commands were ignored, police said. The suspect was also taken to the hospital in critical condition. Authorities said no officers were injured, and a motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

The incident marks the city's worst mass shooting since the attempted assassination of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in 2011.
