LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — The Florida Department of Transportation is installing wrong-way detection devices at Daniels Parkway as part of a major construction project that includes a diverging diamond interchange.
The technology alerts drivers who enter an exit ramp the wrong way while also notifying traffic management officials so they can respond quickly. Crews are preparing for a traffic shift at Daniels Parkway as the project gets underway.
"Something else to chalk up to the Florida drivers," said Dustin Williams, a driver.
The project comes as Southwest Florida has seen two deadly wrong-way crashes on I-75 in recent weeks. One near Immokalee Road killed a 96-year-old Naples man, while another in Charlotte County took the life of a 21-year-old woman.
"People want to make it home safe, and I feel like most people are like safe drivers. But obviously, you have the people who always speed in. Just some people on the wrong side of the road, just you know, and it could not even be your fault, and you could be either hurt or die from it," said Mathias Harmon, a driver.
Some drivers say they haven't encountered a wrong-way driver, but they believe any step that could save lives is worth taking.
"Because we're all one community. We're all one team. We all have one vision. We all should work together and be here to support one another," said Gabriella Flores, a driver.
The southbound I-75 off-ramp at Daniels Parkway will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Wednesday. Drivers can detour by exiting at Colonial Boulevard or Alico Road.
