2 Cape Coral house fires spark safety warning for residents

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — Cape Coral firefighters responded to two back-to-back residential fires that serve as important safety reminders for the community.

The first fire was caused by a candle left burning in a bathroom, according to the Cape Coral Fire Department. The incident was limited primarily to smoke damage, and firefighters were able to ventilate the apartment. There were no injuries, and the residents were able to remain in their home.

Officials emphasized that residents should always extinguish candles before leaving a room or going to bed. Candles should never be left burning unattended.

The second fire was caused by items that had been stored on a stovetop. The new occupants had placed belongings on the stove while moving in, and a faulty burner unexpectedly turned on, igniting the items. No one was home at the time, and there were no injuries.

Fire officials warned that stovetops are for cooking, not storage. Residents should keep stovetops clear of anything that can burn, even when not in use.
