2 drivers accused of street racing at 78 mph in a 45 mph zone in Lehigh Acres

A Lee County deputy spotted two drivers reportedly racing along Lee Boulevard in Lehigh Acres on Saturday.

It was cut short when the deputy stopped both vehicles at the intersection of Lee Boulevard and Sunshine Boulevard in Lehigh Acres.

According to the arrest report, both drivers were accused of flying through a 45 mph zone at 78 mph.

"For me it's pretty scary. But honestly, it's not that surprising on this road. It happens all the time," said Lehigh Acres resident Joeslynn Reyna.

Joeslynn Reyna regularly travels on Lee Boulevard. She says the racing is unsettling.

"They always think nothing's going to happen or it's not going to happen to them and they're not going to be the ones getting caught, but they never know. I mean, anything can happen at any time," said Reyna.

Deputies say both vehicles were in parallel lanes traveling at the same speed and reportedly attempting to overtake the other.

Deputies arrested Felipe Santamaria and Isaac Rodriguez.

"It's just not worth it at the end of the day, just for a joyride," said Reyna.

According to the arrest report, both cars were reportedly in competition to see whose vehicle had the better acceleration and endurance.
