Cape Coral police dig up vacant lot near Kismet Parkway for 2nd day

CAPE CORAL, Fla. (WINK) — Cape Coral police and the Lee County Sheriff's Office have been searching a vacant lot in North Cape Coral for more than a day.

The investigation began Tuesday morning near Kismet Parkway and Northeast 19th Avenue, where forensic crews spent the day searching the property. The work continued into a second day with a dozer digging and people shoveling through the area along the canal.

WINK News has confirmed Cape Coral police are leading the investigation while the sheriff's office is assisting. Cape Coral police have not said what prompted the search, what they're looking for or whether they've recovered anything.

WINK News worked to verify rumors that spread online suggesting the search was connected to missing Cape Coral woman Lauren Dumolo. Her sister, Cassie Carey, said a detective personally contacted her to confirm this investigation is not related to Lauren's disappearance.

For neighbors, the biggest question is what happened in their community.

"They're keeping it hidden still until I guess they figure it out, and then maybe they could release the information," said Daniel Saltanov, a Cape Coral neighbor. "But I guess we all want to know the answer. I mean, hopefully they figure it out soon."

Cape Coral police have only confirmed this is an active investigation and said they will release information when they can. WINK News continues to ask what brought investigators to the site and what happens next.
