City council to vote on multi million dollar contract for new police headquarters

The Fort Myers City Council is set to vote on a $109 million contract to construct a new police headquarters on Fowler Street, replacing the current facility with a modern campus designed to improve operations and better serve the community.

City staff said the new building will enhance day-to-day operations, provide updated technology, and create a more efficient space for officers to respond to calls, investigate crimes, and coordinate during emergencies.

The total cost of the project will be about $144 million. It would be funded primarily through city bonds, along with proceeds from the sale of the old News-Press building and future capital improvement funding.

The city had initially planned to transform the News-Press site into the new headquarters before deciding on the Fowler Street location.

If approved, construction could begin in January and is expected to be completed by August 2028. Today's meeting begins at 4:30 this afternoon.
