A 26-year-old woman is hospitalized with serious injuries after authorities say she reportedly ran a red light and crashed into a Cape Coral police cruiser late Sunday night near Santa Barbara Boulevard and Veterans Parkway.
Newly released video shows the driver reportedly turning left onto Veterans Parkway and colliding with the officer’s vehicle. The video appears to show the Cape Coral officer had the right of way, while the other driver reportedly ran a red light and caused the crash.
Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Greg Bueno confirmed the crash caused significant property damage and injuries.
“As a result of that, there was property damage significant in her injuries. The Cape Coral police officer was injured and transported with minor injuries and unfortunately, the sedan driver sustained serious injuries as an adult female and she was transported to an area hospital,” Bueno said.
The Cape Coral officer involved in the crash was treated for minor injuries and released from the hospital on Sunday, according to Cape Coral Police Department.
Video of the aftermath shows extensive damage to both vehicles. Signs at the intersection warn drivers to stop at red lights and prohibit certain turns.
FHP is continuing to investigate the crash and what led the driver to make the turn.
