ST. JAMES CITY, Fla. (WINK) — On Monday nights, the sound of guitars, drums and laughter echoes through the Beacon of Hope as neighbors of all ages come together to make music.
Music Mondays, held at the nonprofit's Center of Excellence, is a free weekly program that welcomes everyone from first-time musicians to experienced performers. Whether someone wants to learn a new instrument, brush up on old skills or simply enjoy playing alongside others, the goal is to create a fun, supportive space where anyone can join in.
The program is led by Pine Island musicians Warren and Gregory Van Kirk, along with Rich Perkins of the local band Strange Arrangements. They started Music Mondays with one idea in mind: remove the barriers that often keep people from exploring music.
"Music should be for everybody," Warren Van Kirk said. "That's why we made this program free, so anyone can come. We have kids as young as three come out to learn and touch the instruments."
The weekly sessions run from 6 to 7 p.m. every Monday at the Beacon of Hope, 5090 Doug Taylor Circle in St. James City. Participants don't need previous experience to take part, making it an easy way for families, children and adults to discover a new hobby while connecting with others in the community.
Music Mondays is one of several educational programs offered through the Beacon of Hope's Center of Excellence, which also provides GED preparation, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), literacy tutoring and other classes designed to serve Pine Island residents.
The music won't stay inside the classroom for long. On Friday, Aug. 22, participants will have the chance to perform during a community event at Pine Island United Methodist Church.
"It's important because for a lot of people, especially kids, you can't just walk up and play at a restaurant," Gregory Van Kirk said. "This gives people the chance to still perform."
