Fort Myers Beach pier reconstruction progresses with FEMA grant

The Fort Myers Beach pier, destroyed by Hurricane Ian in 2022, is one step closer to being rebuilt after FEMA awarded $6.2 million to Lee County, with $5.5 million allocated for the pier's reconstruction.

The pier was left in ruins, with only its pillars remaining after the hurricane. The process to rebuild the popular destination has faced significant challenges, including design approvals, federal permitting, and funding delays. Last month, Lee County received approval to begin reconstruction.

County officials said coordination work must take place before crews can start construction. This includes meetings, final reviews of the contractor's project schedule, construction submittals, and coordination with regulatory agencies and project stakeholders.

The new pier is planned to extend 1,000 feet over the water and will be 12 feet wide. It will include more fishing space, a new bait shop, public restrooms, and improved storm resiliency.
