Lee County homeowner says driver took delivered package

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WINK) — A Lee County homeowner says what started as a routine Amazon delivery has turned into an active sheriff’s office investigation after her Ring camera appeared to capture a package being taken moments after it was marked as delivered.

Jessica Stachurski says she was expecting a box of school supplies she planned to donate through the nonprofit Better Together when she received a notification from Amazon that the package had arrived.

The delivery photo showed the box sitting on her front porch, but when she went outside to retrieve it, she says it was gone.

“I checked my cameras and saw an Amazon delivery person bring it up, drop it on the porch, take a picture of it,” Stachurski said. “She got out her little handheld device, marked it as delivered, picked up the box and left with it.”

Stachurski shared Ring camera footage with WINK News that appears to show a delivery driver placing a package on the porch, taking a proof-of-delivery photo and from another camera angle, picking up the same box and walking away.

According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office incident report, Stachurski told deputies the package contained $44.91 worth of school supplies. Deputies are investigating the case as a reported grand theft. Stachurski says she contacted Amazon several times after noticing the package was missing.

“They’ve not reached out. They didn’t ask for the videos,” she said. “I’m not even sure it’s making it to the right people at Amazon.”

She says Amazon has since issued a refund, but she still wants answers.

“Is there anything in place to control who they’re sending out to your house and what they’re doing about it when something like this happens?” Stachurski said. “It doesn’t seem to be anything right now.”

Neighbors say they’re surprised by what they saw in the video.

“Everybody has Ring cameras nowadays,” neighbor Jere Marvin said. “You’re gonna get caught.”

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Stachurski filed a report and says the case is being investigated by the 5th Precinct Patrol. Deputies encourage anyone who believes a delivery driver stole a package to report it to law enforcement, verify the delivery status with the carrier, preserve any original surveillance video and provide investigators with tracking information and other evidence.

The sheriff’s office also recommends residents retrieve packages promptly, use secure delivery locations when possible and avoid confronting anyone they suspect of stealing a package.

Amazon told WINK News it is looking into the incident. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office investigation remains active.
