New York man arrested months after I-75 crash killed dad, 2 boys

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — A man is under arrest months after a deadly I-75 crash that killed three people.

Ryan Richard Mowdy, 28, from New York, was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol's Traffic Homicide Unit following what troopers describe as an exhaustive criminal investigation. He was booked into the Charlotte County Jail, where he's now facing three counts of DUI manslaughter, three counts of vehicular homicide, evidence tampering, marijuana possession and several other charges.

Newly released details from troopers lay out what they say happened before, during and even after the deadly crash in March. Investigators say they determined Mowdy was under the influence of marijuana when he drove his Jeep across the grass median on northbound I-75 and into the path of an oncoming Hyundai Santa Fe.

The impact killed the driver, 25-year-old Jose Martinez, along with two boys, just 5 and 6 years old. Troopers also say that after the crash, Mowdy removed a small black container from his Jeep, threw it over a fence into a wooded area, and investigators later recovered it.

They say the container held marijuana. Mowdy remains in the Charlotte County Jail.

WINK News spoke with the mother of the two boys killed in the crash. She declined an on-camera interview but said it was about time the man involved in the crash was arrested.

"My entire world was in that car," she said.
