SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, (WINK) —Tropical Storm Bertha made landfall today at almost precisely 3 p.m. local time in southwest Florida. The storm's center is about as bare-bones as a tropical system can get, which has helped limit many of the inland impacts communities along the Gulf Coast are experiencing. There was also a notable northward wobble before sunrise this morning that brought the low-pressure center ashore north of the National Hurricane Center's forecast. While that shift helped spare portions of Louisiana from some of the more significant storm surge and wave impacts, we're not entirely out of the woods just yet.
While Bertha's current core looks ragged and largely stripped of deep thunderstorms, our attention now shifts to the western Gulf. Overnight, a large burst of deep, organized convection erupted over the open water. That area of thunderstorms is moving toward Texas and could influence where Bertha ultimately tracks over the next 12 to 24 hours.
Tonight, we'll be watching satellite trends and wind observations closely. There's a chance Bertha's center could "jump," meaning the primary low-pressure center that moved inland over Louisiana could reorganize farther south over the open Gulf. This type of center relocation is more common with disorganized tropical systems like Bertha, where multiple areas of low pressure can compete before one becomes dominant.
Several higher-resolution hurricane models, along with global guidance such as the European and American GFS models, depict some version of this center relocation. While confidence isn't high enough to call it the most likely outcome, it's certainly a scenario worth watching closely.
If a relocation were to occur, it would most likely happen after sunset tonight and into the early morning hours of Thursday. This is typically the most favorable time of day for tropical thunderstorms to intensify over warm Gulf waters. As those storms grow taller and stronger, they enhance rising air and can lower surface pressure beneath them. If that newly developed area of lower pressure becomes stronger than the current inland circulation, Bertha's center could reform beneath the deepest thunderstorms, effectively shifting its center back over water.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, it's important to emphasize that this does not necessarily mean Bertha will become significantly stronger. The storm will still be battling several unfavorable environmental factors that should limit intensification. However, a center relocation could extend Bertha's time over the warm waters of the Gulf, allowing it to maintain tropical storm characteristics longer and increasing the risk of tropical storm impacts along the Texas coast.
The WINK Weather Authority will be monitoring Bertha closely through the night, watching to see whether the pieces continue to fall into place for this potential center relocation and what that could mean for the Texas Gulf Coast.
