Cape Coral to host town hall discussing proposed $1.5 billion 2027 budget

Cape Coral city leaders will discuss a proposed $1.5 billion budget and a potential $37 million shortfall during a Fiscal Year 2027 budget town hall meeting tonight.

The city is working to prepare for a possible revenue drop if Florida voters approve a property tax amendment that would expand homestead exemptions. Officials say this could leave Cape Coral $37 million short, and they have already been exploring ways to address the gap.

Options being considered include increasing the public service tax, adding fees at city parks and recreation centers, expanding the public service tax to charter schools, and continuing a hiring freeze for some positions while protecting public safety services.

City staff will also explain which projects are included in next year’s budget and take questions from residents. The budget will go through several more public workshops before final approval.
