A familiar face to many on the Gulf Coast is now taking center stage on national television.
Twenty-three-year-old Sarah Hardwig, who grew up in Naples, impressed the judges on America's Got Talent Tuesday night, earning four yes votes and advancing in the competition after performing Lainey Wilson's "Heart Like a Truck."
For Gulf Coast News, Hardwig's appearance marks a full-circle moment.
Years before she stepped onto one of television's biggest stages, Gulf Coast News introduced viewers to Hardwig as a young girl in Naples with a passion for music. Over the years, we've followed her journey as she pursued her dream of becoming a professional singer.
Music has always been at the center of Hardwig's life. During her America's Got Talent audition, she shared that she was born blind after being diagnosed with a genetic eye condition at just five months old. She told the judges she hopes her story inspires others to chase their dreams, regardless of the challenges they face.
"I want to prove to the world that regardless of whether you have a disability or not, you can do absolutely anything you set your mind to," Hardwig said during her audition.
In an interview with Gulf Coast News after Tuesday night's episode, Hardwig said making it to America's Got Talent stage was both exciting and emotional.
"There are so many mixed emotions with that," she said. "There's a whole lot of nerves for sure... It's definitely a mixture of nerves and excitement. I'm so grateful to be on America's Got Talent."
Hardwig said being blind has presented challenges throughout her life, but she's never allowed them to define what she can accomplish.
"Just because it's difficult doesn't mean it's impossible," she said. "I can still do things that sighted people can do, maybe just a little bit differently, and that's okay."
To help support her growing music career, Hardwig and her family eventually left Naples and moved to Nashville.
Her father, Greg Hardwig, said the decision wasn't easy, but it was one they knew they had to make.
"It wasn't easy, but it was something we knew she wanted. She felt like she belonged here," he said.
The move is already paying off.
After earning praise from all four judges on America's Got Talent, Hardwig is moving on in the competition and hopes to continue building her music career beyond the show.
"I want to release an EP," she told Gulf Coast News. "My overall goal is just to be the best songwriter, singer... the best version of myself that I can be."
As Hardwig continues her journey on the national stage, one thing hasn't changed: she'll have plenty of fans on the Gulf Coast cheering her on every step of the way.
