Warning signs posted for poor water quality at Tropicana Park in Cape Coral

The City of Cape Coral has posted warning signs at Tropicana Park, alerting visitors to poor water quality caused by bacteria that can lead to skin rashes, eye infections, and other health issues.

The signs, installed last week by the city, caution beachgoers, boaters, and pet owners to check the water conditions before swimming or allowing animals to enter. Tropicana Park, one of Cape Coral’s newest waterfront parks, features a beach area, kayak launch, and other amenities.

During a visit to the park, dead fish were seen lining the shoreline. The bacteria, known as Enterococcus, can affect fish and other aquatic animals. Fishermen at the park reported catching very little and expressed concerns about whether the water quality might worsen over time.

Cindy Nolan, a Cape Coral resident of more than 10 years, visited Tropicana Park for the first time and shared her disappointment.

“Well, I think it's hard to believe that they open this, and you really can't use it. It's not usable with the gators and the water quality. It's just not right,” Nolan said.

City officials stated that their environmental resource staff samples the water weekly and updates the warning signs as needed.
