A new device called ADAM (Airborne Detection for Algae Monitoring) is helping researchers measure airborne toxins released by algae blooms, with promising results from initial tests along the Caloosahatchee River.
"We could kind of smell the festering bloom and off-gassing inside of our house on that particular weekend," said Jason Pim, board president of Calusa Waterkeeper, recalling the algae blooms of 2018.
"If things smell funny and make you dizzy, your body is trying to tell you something," Pim added.
On Thursday, the scientific journal "Toxins" published a months-long study on ADAM, which allows researchers to measure the toxins algae release into the air. Dr. James Metcalf of Brain Chemistry Labs explained the implications of airborne toxins.
"If it's present in the air, then unfortunately you can't avoid breathing," Metcalf said.
In 2021, nonprofits Calusa Waterkeeper and Brain Chemistry Labs conducted 21 tests using ADAM along the Caloosahatchee River. While they did not find concerning levels of toxins, the device proved effective in reliably testing the collected samples.
"What this kit does is establish a repeatable way to measure those exposures," Pim said.
Metcalf emphasized the importance of this research for the future. "We can protect ourselves and our children," he said.
Although additional funding is needed to continue this work, both Metcalf and Pim said this study is only the beginning.
