Deputies continue investigation into hot car death of 17-month-old girl in Lee County

The investigation into the death of a 17-month-old girl who was left in a hot car is ongoing in Lee County.

The Florida Department of Children and Families confirmed the 17-month-old girl who died Tuesday was in foster care at the time of her death.

She was found unresponsive in her car seat in the foster parent's vehicle where she had been accidentally left for an extended period of time, according to a Florida Department of Children and Families report.

Kids and Car Safety president Janette Fennell said this can happen to anyone.

"From our list, we've gone all the way from the CEO of a hospital to a mailman, to a pizza maker, to literally a NASA scientist," she said.

Fennell also stressed the importance of being sure you don't leave children in cars unattended.

"Look before you lock," she said. "[It] doesn't cost a penny; takes three seconds. Open the back door just to make sure no one or nothing's been left behind."

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to 7806 College Parkway at around 5 p.m. Tuesday after someone found the girl dead in a hot car. Deputies are working with the State Attorney's Office in this investigation.
