A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Cape Coral man accused of drunk driving and almost crashing into a police vehicle.
According to Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, Ariel Gonzalez Volero, 49, ran a stop sign in Cape Coral and nearly crashed into a Cape Coral Police Department vehicle.
Officers pulled Gonzalez Volero over and immediately detected a smell of alcohol and said that Gonzalez Volero struggled to differentiate between the air conditioning controller and the volume dial for the radio, according to Crime Stoppers.
Gonzalez Volero also handed officers his credit card when asked for his driver's license, Crime Stoppers said. Gonzalez Volero then failed the standard field sobriety tests and was arrested on DUI charges.
Officers searched Gonzalez Volero's car and found five small empty bottles of alcohol, as well as a bag of what Gonzalez Volero called "crushed up sex pills," which turned out to be heroin, Crime Stoppers said.
Gonzalez Volero was released from jail under the condition of returning for his court date, which he failed to do. He is 5'8", weighs 200 pounds, and was last known to be living in central Cape Coral.
